Curator’s Comments:
Your portfolio of digital paintings celebrates the sheer majesty of nature, and in several works, the nobility of simpler times in rural family farming. One could perhaps classify this work as Romantic, both in terms of its nostalgic yearning for the past, and belief in nature as an awe-inspiring force. (This is underscored in the small amount of accompanying text.) I appreciate the technique and realism in all of these paintings. Vista is particularly reminiscent of Thomas Cole, and his Hudson River School companions. I spent more time viewing Log Landing today, which has an interesting depiction of the logging industry intervening into this pristine landscape. I realize it was posted quite some time ago, but I find myself coming back to the painting to try and determine if the intent is to celebrate or condemn mans’ use of nature’s abundant resources. The straightforward approach to the machinery and cleared forest doesn’t tilt towards environmental criticism, nor does it present hard working people behind the machines. It simply is. The equality of scale and impact of visual weight between the clearing trucks and mountains also sets up an unusual equilibrium. Man and nature could be equally matched in conflict, or harmoniously balanced. I would very much like to hear your thoughts on this piece, and of course see more of your recent work.
