Curator’s Comments:
Leap of Faith came up today, and it was a good incentive to review your intriguing and stylistic scenes. I realized however, Leap is even more voyeuristic, as the subject’s head and identity are uncharacteristically cropped from view. The subject and title are both ironic and disturbing- leaping from a window is less likely a leap of faith than one of desperation. But with longer viewing, I sense the smooth and careful movements and attire of the female figure belie our expectations of a panicked or disheveled jumper. As with many of your paintings, there is a seductive film-noir quality that holds the viewers’ attention, and forces us to bear witness to potentially destructive behaviors. This particular piece, with tightly cropped action, is less about personal relationships or descriptive context. In some ways this creates a less complex narrative. But I imagine the still moments before and after this image. I realize most of your paintings were posted many years ago. I would love to see what you’ve been doing since.
