Curator’s Comments:
The fetishized piece Deer Hunt appeared randomly on the site today. It holds even more enigmatic allure outside the context of your other beaded works. I remember admiring the more complex and ironic piece entitled Drop Dead Gorgeous several years ago, and may have overlooked this formally simpler artwork. The sculpture appears to be a jeweled antler or bone, with tiny pictographic hunters and animals moving along the cross-contoured edges in contrasting hues. As some of the figures disappear as they turn along the cylindrical form, I wonder if the piece is intended viewed from all sides. The dominance of deep blue beads across the object’s surface interestingly succeeds in obscuring or camouflaging its origin, rather than accentuating the illusion of representation. The title brings the viewer back to a place of conquest; perhaps in material passion of nature through lavish embellishment.
