Coasting; a glamorous term for floating. What better place to tread water than beside the sea. Loose insightful questions on placement and strategy. How such a big body of water gives clouded reflections. An artist asking questions to the audience – what is it that’s weighing you down?

Curator’s Comments:

The description expressing the conceptual motivations for the piece, and title Coasting contributed immensely to my viewing experience. The broad visceral, gestural expression is balanced by the smaller dotted squares, which slow down the visual movement and provide order to the turmoil.  Seeing the weight of the dark cool ground as a body of water reinforced the idea of coasting within a potentially distressing expanse.  The smaller contrasted strokes of tinted primary hues relate as figures against the ground.  The thin, irregular band of lighter scumbled paint along the bottom edge of the piece provides visual reprieve.  The question you ultimately ask of the viewer resonates in this painting, and stays in our collective psyche long after viewing.
