Portfolios: Weigh of waiting

Curator’s Comments:
Thank you for sharing this new painting. Weight of Waiting is an evocative piece, with only vaguely perceptible shifts in the trio of facial expressions. The textured allover surface patterning animates the faces, which I see as mask-like in their universal, stylized forms. The format of the horizontal repetition and dark framing creates a spatial transition that is not unlike the progression of film stills. The cropping heightens the attention to the contrasting eyes, and minimizes the figure-ground relationship. I do interpret the empty blackness of the eyes as instilling a slightly foreboding mood to the piece, but the title’s reference to waiting arguably softens any darker reading of content. While the dimensions of the painting aren’t noted, I imagine presenting on a large scale would create an unsettled feeling; with a smaller work projecting a quieter intimacy.
