Curator’s Comments:
This seemingly untitled work came up on the site today, and I was delighted to revisit your exquisite organic abstractions posted many years earlier. I find it intriguing that many of your paintings have semi-transparent layers of space and pattern, but this image has perhaps the greatest depth of atmospheric perspective through the hazy (glazed?) background. Media isn’t indicated, but it appears completely painted, rather than employing collaged papers as several of your other works suggest. Tender green growth spirals out of a cluster of wood-like gray columns. The columns are highly articulated, which would normally create a realistic representation of the subject; I simultaneous see them as forming a decomposing tree stump, and as denying naturally identifiable forms. The complexity of the yellow-brown cellular sections behind the cooler hued stump contextualizes the emphasis on biological growth and decay. Other works echo the association to a disease process in both form and title, such as Injury Web, or Polyp Path. (The ruddy skin-like inclusions in Polyp Path are particularly visceral.) But even in the face of these references to malady, the paintings remain very pleasing and provocative abstractions. Please do post new works on the site if you’re checking back. I would love to see your new work.
