Curator’s Comments:
The simply drawing entitled Chair was created many years ago, but it caught my attention in a recent random selection of works. While chairs can often take on a figural presence, this piece beautifully speaks to the idea of absence. The degree of finish in the rendered sections shows texture and believable chiaroscuro, so the result suggests intentionality rather than an unfinished picture. Most of your other paintings and drawings on the site have a more decorative approach with high chroma colors, while the graphite drawings Cat and Vases similarly appear to highlight particular features of the subject. But an underlying economic aesthetic is also present in the photographs entitled The Bridge, and To Where? I would be interested to hear about your design choices if you still frequent the site.
