Curator’s Comments:
I enjoy these quilted paintings whenever I come across them on the site. I find it interesting that there appears to be a different aesthetic approach at play in the quieter oval works, as they generally feature lower chroma hues and values. In contrast, the numerically titled pieces contain color fields reminiscent of Modernist paintings, forgoing allover compartmented patchwork for selected areas of visual rest. The artwork identified as P1050046 has a rather active design, but the repeated red elements and cowry shell inclusions provide visual order. The red and black linear patterns are also suggestive of Mola work. Most of these richly layered works were completed a decade ago, and I do hope you consider sharing what you’re making now.
