Curator’s Comments:
I had the pleasure of viewing Birds’ Eye View this morning, when it appeared in a random selection on the site. The puzzle-piece compartmentalization of the birds and foliage form an engaging and vibrant pattern. The purple and orange plumage in the cedar waxwings and red tree branches serve to further break up the anticipated contours of the repeated birds. This opens up the value pattern of the piece, creating a beautifully orchestrated visual flow. With closer viewing I was able to appreciate the smaller birds, which I view as diminutive versions of the larger waxwings rather than simply repeated adults further away in the picture plane. Perhaps because of the lack of a grounding horizon, the painting swims with allover movement. It’s a strong piece that takes subject matter familiar to the viewer, and changes our perceptions of space and color. Please do consider updating the site with your new work. I would love to see the direction your painting practice has taken.
