Curator’s Comments:
I came across this untitled piece (enumerated 658) by chance today, and reflected on it initially presenting as much larger than the modest dimensions noted. By that I mean there is a substantial and dynamic presence to the red-orange, ochre, and black organic shapes, and a muscular gestural quality tied to the forms. The smaller light grey brush marks have the quality of surface scratches, or an abraded, scumbled paint film. This makes me wonder if raw pigments were used along with the acrylic medium. There is a vaguely figurative quality to the abstraction, which I also observe in your related pieces on the site. The untitled piece noted as 576 shares a similarly robust sensibility, but in an achromatic palette. Somehow, the absence of color still transmits a fleshy surface in the grey and black contrasted modulations. I’m drawn into these pieces, and yet sense there is more going on beneath the surface.
