Curator’s Comments:
This male nude appeared on the site in a random selection today, and I appreciated the anatomical accuracy of the drawing as well as the mystery in the gesture. The red and black charcoal noted as the media provide a granulated smoothness to the body as well as the surrounding interior space. Chiaroscuro configures a sculpted form, while the central positioning of the figure within the picture plane places additional emphasis on shadow. The figure’s hands covering his face suggests emotional distress, and yet the environment doesn’t offer much by way of narrative clues. The clouds out the window obscure any landscape or reference to a source of the figure’s reaction. Looking back through your other pieces on the site, I see that I commented on and admired a photorealistic, multi-figure oil painting. Again, I find this piece exquisite in technique but strangely devoid of emotional content. It’s even more intriguing to compare the lone male figure I came across today to this other painting. The lone man encapsulates a stoicism in his stance, and yet I keep lingering on what isn’t seen. These are provocative works for many reasons, and I hope you consider posting new images to the site if you are still active, and are still able.
