Curator’s Comments:

Calm and fiery destruction seem to teeter in a well-honed balance in this unique work.  The seemingly untitled painting came up on the site recently, despite it being posted many years ago.  The complementary red and blue-green hues stood out in the thumbnail image. Coming in for a closer look at the full image, the viewer is surprised by the diagonally askew red car leaving a trail of broken structures amidst red-orange flames.  I’m intrigued with how the light reflective vessel in the center of the composition beautifully balances the chaos of the competing diagonals and visually connects the fires reflection with the brushy green strokes in the mysterious draped surface in the far background. The vessel also seems to hold a vaguely figural presence in the absence of the car’s driver. Each object is recognizably familiar, and yet combined they form a surreal tableau.  Looking back through your other pieces on the site I was even more taken with the saturated color palette in this work. I remember commenting on Ocean Ribbons several years ago, and admiring the subtle shifts in pink and green. The dexterity in mark-making and color are wonderfully represented throughout your body of work, and I hope to see more of it on the site in the future.
