Curator’s Comments:
The Lesson appears to be a carefully constructed piece; an exercise in calibrated visual counterbalance. The scene and subject matter on one hand portray a small personal and intimate gesture, but I’m more struck by the graphic impact of the lines in the composition. The flat blue background cleanly offsets the austere dark shapes of the figures. I appreciate the cropping of the dancer, as her body stretches across the full width of the picture plane. Cutting off the top of the downcast head of the instructor directs us back to the small dancer, and keeps our focus on her outstretched limbs. Looking through your other images on the site, I remember commenting on the digital photograph entitled Take Me Out to the Ballgame a number of years ago. While subject matter varies throughout your works shared on the site, formal design concerns with line and intersectionality appear to be a stronger focus, and unmistakably unify your artistic practice. I do hope you will consider adding new works if you remain active on the site.
