Curator’s Comments:
Sunrise caught my attention in a random selection of landscape paintings on the site today, and I was drawn in by the ambiguous horizon. The tinted violet streaking across the canvas dividing the land from its reflection creates a soft tension between blue and orange amorphous forms. The violet beautifully transitions to a darker brown silhouette in the top portion of the tree line. The piece is at once representational and abstract. The expectation of a mirrored image is interestingly halted by the irregularity between them- it’s not often the reflection is a more intense version of the original. There seems to be a metaphor embedded in this anticipation, but it is enough to be presented with the glowing natural splendor nonetheless.
