Curator’s Comments:
Muse has the timeless drama reminiscent of a film noir still. The black and white portrait makes good use of velvety blacks in heightened contrast. I enjoy the open value pattern, which merges the subject’s dark hair with the black background. The slightly larger proportion of space above her head in the square adds to the sensation of pressing quiet. While it isn’t indicated if this is an analog or digital print, the relatively soft focus contributes to the faintly nostalgic mood. Looking through your other pieces on the site I was reminded of comments I made about your architectural images. These photographs often feature a focused singularity of subject, and shift the viewers vantage point in subtly unexpected ways. To some degree Muse utilizes the diagonal shapes found more often in your urban structures than in the other figurative pieces. I would be interested to know more about your process, and hope you will consider sharing new works if you are still active on the site.
