Curator’s Comments:

This piece, presumably entitled Eternal Slumber, recently came up in a random selection on the site.  I’m attracted to the use of light in the painting. The vertical shaft of natural daylight in the center of the composition illuminates the floor and open gate in a predictably manner, but the figural statue on the pedestal takes on an opalescent quality with reflected coral and purple tinted hues. I’m also intrigued by the placement of a framed picture within the picture, and the pair of abandoned black shoes in the lower left. The shoes read as remnants of a living figure who has left the space, and for me, visually and conceptually reinforce the missing parts on the statue that is still present. The result is a mood of surreal emptiness in what otherwise is an inviting, warmly lit interior space.
