Curator’s Comments:
This werewolf drawing came up when I searched random images today, and I liked the graphic nature of the full moon in contrast with the textural interest in the subject’s fur. The reflected light shifting the values on the creature’s head and deep facial shadows reveals a moonlit view. The exaggeration, or should I say clarity of the subject’s features, makes the werewolf seem familiar. The relatively wide eyes also offers a slightly campy portrait, reminiscent of vintage movie posters. There’s an intensity to its expression, but its diverted gaze allows the viewer entry into the tightly cropped space. I was amused to see your portfolio on the site consists of other more common creatures, with the piece entitled Constellations as the other drawing hinting at the supernatural. I enjoy the dexterity in which you easily shift attention from pattern to value reversals-particularly in your black and white work. I do hope you consider adding new work to the site.
