Curator’s Comments:

Paper Wasp remains a popular image often viewed on the site despite it being created a decade ago.  There’s an intriguing interplay between the found papers of various sources, creating organic and unexpected geometric patterning.  The repeated motif of the linocuts is subtle, but nicely marries hand-drawn insects with the more scientific illustrations. While my eye lingers over the small inclusion of text, the whirling lines of the wasp paper direct me to other parts of the composition. The pale hues in the overall high key value pattern also serve to unify the collaged sections, and soften the “sting” of what might otherwise be uninviting subjects. While the dimension of the piece aren’t noted, I imagine it being on a rather small scale, to emphasis the delicacy and fragility of the winged creatures.
