Curator’s Comments:
I came across this apparently untitled drawing today, and admired the intensely built up shadows. Your comment about the work “emerging from the shadows of obfuscation” added to the enigmatic narrative unfolding. I view all three of the main figures as children, with the central body curled into a dark womb-like interior space. The young girl on the left takes on a demure and nurturing posture, perhaps because of her proximity to the reclining baby. The girl on the right, by contrast, confronts the viewer with a direct and forward gaze. Her garments are curiously more detailed, recalling the doll that appears in the lower bottom of the drawing. The dramatic open value pattern and formal rendering of the subjects are stunning. But it is the psychological connection between the figures that holds my attention. I remember admiring your more anatomically articulated works several years ago. The strength of that understanding and skill provides a marvelous foundation to this mysterious piece.
