I came across this seemingly untitled piece (IMG_2019) today, and became intrigued with the way the mood changed with prolonged viewing. The collage first attracts the viewer with the lush green of the frog contrasting the fuchsia hued foliage.  The pink clustered plant buds read as both floral elements and (frog) eggs.  This association of scale and shape may be reinforced by the large trio of blue eggs in the central nest.  The frog’s entrance into the picture plane from the extreme angle of the upper corner suggests it is a predator in the scene, but the scale somewhat thwarts this relationship.  The visible contours of the cut photographic elements also work against the illusion that the flora and fauna coexist in the same space. It was only after I spent some time with the work that I noticed the upside-down head in the upper left corner. It is camouflaged in the brown grass. The head looks to be a Bodhisattva, but the hole in the head, inverted, has curious associations. I wonder if this piece intends to be a reflection on natural beauty, or if the figure combined with the eggs imparts spiritual (human) tendencies towards the cycle of birth, death, and regeneration.
