Curator’s Comments:

This modest and understated painting almost slipped past my radar- I don’t remember a prior viewing despite it being posted on the site back in 2013.  The bold and simple title ironically plays a subtle part of the piece- but I do appreciate the warm tint on the figure’s dress on the right.  The second woman appears to be a virtual (but not exact) mirror reflection of the first, without the color tinting, and of course the prominently displayed vacuum cleaner.  It is a curious inclusion, for while it immediately constructs the narrative of a domestic scene, it doesn’t account for the visual duplicity. The act of the person pausing during this chore to self-reflect is also mysterious if not voyeuristic. Looking back through your other pieces on the site, I remember admiring many.  I also enjoyed the reference points you offered on your process, which include sophisticated manipulations of both analog and digital processes. Red may very well employ these practices.  However, I feel there is a softness to the subject that is not as prominent in your other works. The haziness is further amplified by the light source beyond the room, as it creates undefined shadows. The quiet intensity holds my interest.  I do hope you consider posting current work in the fast-approaching new year.
