Curator’s Comments:

BRUTUS BD is an enigmatic piece, in which metal appears to transform into silk and rust.  While the media and scale aren’t identified with this particular work, I imagine that it fits in with the series of pieces constructed from found metal objects.  The rusty background offers a contrasting patina to the smooth gray object flowing in the center of the field.  The roughly painted signature at the bottom of the work anchors the space, and also provides a coarse counterpoint to the smoothly modeled sculptural surfaces.  Looking back through your other mixed media sculptures on the site, I appreciate the continuity of organic forms made from unyielding components. Some take on figural shapes, such as the piece CAPRICE fond blanc, that I admired and commented on back in 2013, while others such as HOKMA OK and BIG BANG fond blanc exist as fetishistic emblems. BRUTUS BD intuitively hovers between image and object, creating an unreal suspension of weight and purpose so the viewer appreciates the pure sensuality of the form.
