Curator’s Comments:

I’m captivated by the dark ambiguity of Food for Thought, and all of the associations that connect with the title’s idiom.  Created many years ago, the piece appeared in a random selection recently of works about food.  The piece appears to be photo-based, although the specific media isn’t noted. The open-mouthed fish (Catfish? Carp?) emerging from the murky ground look hungry and primal.  The darkness of their eyes, or possible transparency reflecting the hues in the background, look empty and skull-like. With longer viewing I’m struck by the sensation that the “sea” in which they swim isn’t actually water or mud, but a sandier, denser surface.  The relationship between ancient looking fish and a dry riverbed does indeed give the viewer food for thought. Whether we are the consumer in the natural order, or prey amidst vanished resources is a haunting question.
