Curator’s Comments:
Coming up randomly on the site, I realize that these works were posted many years ago. I’m intrigued by the artwork you’ve posted, which has a distinctly commemorative style of illustration, both in subject matter and approach to design. The reddish conte drawing for the stamp honoring the British “QMum #1” forgoes the usual stoic expression seen in many of your other traditional and accomplished historical portraits. The asymmetry of her positioning on the paper, and sideways gaze reveals a pensive vulnerability that is both surprising and intimate. Wearing the crown and what the viewer imagines to be heirloom jewels, her bare shoulders belie the facilitated shield of social status and wealth. It is a sensitive drawing, and nicely expands your artistic range of highly decorated commissioned tableaus.
