Curator’s Comments:
This elegant metal-worked guardian figure came up in a random selection on the search today. I remember viewing your other figural works some time ago, and so am glad to have the opportunity to revisit these pieces. Guardian (3) is a rather simple, streamlined form, recalling Brancusi’s later works. I appreciated the comment made about the detail image back when it was posted, as I also detect a resemblance to Easter Island Moai sculptures in the heavy brow line in the abstracted head. I find it interesting that this piece appears to tie together several aesthetic traditions when it comes to figurative sculpture. The connection to African fetish, or voodon, is less apparent for me than in the nail encrusted N’kissi bodies, while the economy of form is grounded in Modernism. The helmet-like form of the head portrays the archetype of a protector, while the sleek body presents as open and vulnerable. The piece clearly enjoys a timeless engagement with past and present. I would love to see what you’re doing now, and hope you will consider sharing your new work if you’re still on the site.
