For this month I am showcasing a collection of Scottish Cemetery portraits that were collected between 2006 - 2008 in and around the Edinburgh area. A small portion of this collection is entering the archives of RCHAMS, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. The photographs are also the current focus of a special project taking place at St. George’s School for Girls in Edinburgh. The students are using these images as a stepping stone for a detailed study of regional historical cemeteries and their relation to Scottish culture and History. There is additional instruction in developing skills related to photography and using the Adobe Photoshop software for image processing.

My fascination with these portraits runs parallel to my exploration of these historic sites. With each annual visit to these richly visual sites, I discovered a “face” to the people buried beneath the markers. These graveyards somehow became more personal when I was presented with an actual image of the individual buried below. Many of these cemeteries hold the silent voices of the past. These photographic images put a face to the name and a more personal meaning to the markers erected in their honor.

I'm pleased what I wrote resonated with you. I can sometimes be off the mark with what was intended- we speak a visual language, and words are often inadequate. Please feel free to use any or part of my comments as you wish.

As a side note, I visited a gorgeous old cemetery outside of Edinburgh many years ago. I don't remember its name, but it was at the base of an extinct volcano called 'Arthur's Seat'. I’d like to think you’ve traveled that way too.
