Curator’s Comments:
I don’t know where I might have viewed your paintings before, but I believe I recognize the strong gestural sensibility and organic abstraction within your Grid Series. The regularity of the grid structure seems to be purposefully broken down in this third piece in the series, with diagonal divisions giving way to small pieces of vibrant, virtually floral pieces. I especially admire the triadic primary color palette which stabilizes what would otherwise be a clash of strong hot and cool color, just as these hues are decisively carried throughout the painting. Larger distributions of red and yellow are detected in shapes on the left side of the picture plane, which keeps the balanced work from becoming overly predictable. There also seems to be a significant amount of layering of the tactile paint surface, relieving the opacity of the tinted hues. The companion piece entitled Gender Issues similarly enjoys animated interplay between warm and cool color. Assuming the pastel pink and blue represent gender, I find this piece interesting in that it offers boldly patterned elements; more ornamental than biological. I like the break in the repeated circular shapes on the right side of the piece, as implied boundaries appear to fashion edges of negative and positive space.
