Curator’s Comments:
A Little Boat is a remarkably satisfying painting, considering the unpretentious subject matter. The child is compressed in the space, as if to make herself smaller. There is a certain irony in this compacted posture, since by filling the picture plane she makes the boat appear even smaller proportionally, while squeezing into the confines expands her physical presence. This play on scale has an Alice in Wonderland characteristic. The open space on the right quiets the scene, while the muted color palette and her wistful expression further contribute to the melancholy mood of the piece. I also appreciate the universality of the figures in your work. While the girl in this painting has a specific identity, the narrative created by the simple addition of the paper boat connect her to the play and dreams of children everywhere.
