Curator’s Comments:

The exuberant painting entitled From the bank to the over one: The Observer demonstrates a dynamically designed interplay between order and chaos. The saturated knifework plays against a traditional figure-ground relationship, and for me conjures glitched digital imagery in a painterly format. Dense areas of darker pigment give way to a slightly more open field in the bottom left cover; the pale blue hue provides some needed visual rest in the composition.  I like that it takes me some time to detect the eye in the center of the piece, despite it’s centralized location. Once seen, the eye becomes a focal point that grounds the active textures, and provides narrative content into what overwise would be viewed as formal non-objectivity. I would echo Neil S Howe’s comment made back in 2014, and agree the relieved symmetry of the clusters of warm and cool hues provides a foil to any spatial predictability.

You go away from the symmetry in this and it works better. I think symmetry can work but often it needs a certain precision to function. Look at Mondrian.
