Smooth, rich, delicious, decadent…..I’ve been viewing this unusual painting for some time now, and still teeter between acute attraction and repulsion! It’s a wonderful play on the visceral nature of our senses- visually engaging with texture and taste. While escargot is inarguably a delicacy along with the chocolate bar, I assume the juxtaposition of the images, and particularly the scale of the snail/slug is intended to challenge the viewers’ perceptions of smooth and delicious. Scale of the overall work isn’t indicated, but the proportions suggest it could be uncomfortably large. I also find it interesting that the painting is highly representational, but isn’t glazed enough to eliminate the artists’ hand. Brushstrokes push the visual movement of the animal across the surface of the candy, reflecting wet versus dry surfaces. I don’t see anything quite like it in the rest of your work, and so I wonder about the motivation and skilled attention to the curious combination.
