Curator’s Comments:
This image, identified only as 9-11-19 at 11:30 AM recently appeared in a random selection of works on the site. The piece suggests the fracturing of time because of its frame within a frame, showing elemental shifts in the landscape. While the exterior, “primary” landscape is peaceful in local cool color and horizontal orientation, I can’t help wondering if the date of 9-11 is intended to recall a seismic event of some kind, alluded to in the cascading blue and white streaks in the inside vignette. Another distinction I see within the dueling frames could be the change between an organic and man-made ground of some sort, as the smaller picture shows a more regularly textured bottom surface. The aligned horizon connects the environments, reinforcing the understanding that they depict the same space. I’m intrigued by the overall sense of calm that is challenged by the smaller window, as if there is a storm brewing off the distant, smooth horizon.
