Curator’s Comments:
It’s interesting that this piece came up in a random search and I didn’t immediately recognize it as part of your extensive oeuvre. Your series of photographic stone portraits and monuments are quite distinctive and alluring. But in addition to the varied subject matter in Glasgow Botantics, this photograph captures a very different but distinctive aesthetic. Yet it’s equally appealing. The overall gray tone has a silvery blue sheen that intimates diffused light despite the considerably low value contrast. It may also be the thinly arcing ribbed lines between the planes of glass that convey a feeling of fragile elegance. The architectural ornament softens the severity of the structure, and slows down the eye as it traverses across the longer expanses of uninterrupted line. My initial thought about it lacking the patina so common in your other works may be misdirected, as the space does communicate a sense of still organic presence arrested in time.
