Curator’s Comments:
Grasses was posted quite a while ago, but I was glad to revisit the piece when it appeared in a random selection. The dexterous handling of atmospheric space is evident in the chunky portrayal of the blocks of tall grass in the foreground, which raise up and soften into dark rolling mounds in the background tree line. Warmer brown hues are evident in the smooth path, leading the viewer into the grassy landscape. I see that some bits of blue-violet pigment are incorporated in the left edge of the grass, but rather than depicting specific floral inclusions, they serve to add visual interest and contrast the perimeter of the clearing. Looking back through your other landscapes on the site, the viewer is reminded of your broad painting practice. The simplicity of form in your photographs and paintings of singular still life objects no doubt inform this other body of work.
