Curator’s Comment:

This is a curious, almost startling image. When viewed in the context of your other skull sculptures and sculpturally related mask forms I feel it goes beyond presentation of a three-dimensional work and creates a completely new and original installation.  The mood is both mysterious because of the dark shadow cutting across the face, and humorous because of the underlying expression. The wide eyes and mouth either scream or register surprise. The space suggests a figure looking through a barrier or bars into the outside light.  I also appreciate the larger amount of black negative space in the top of the composition. It is unexpected proportionally and psychology creates a slightly oppressive weight.  I would like to see similar photographic staging of some of the Easter Island inspired heads.

The paper mâché face will eventually dry to a darker color, leaving the inlaid cast details in a lighter color.
