Curator’s Comments:
The sensory qualities of this painting support a dank, earthy passage into deep woods. While scale and media aren’t noted (pastel?), I’m attracted to the elongated horizontal expanse of the piece, which is roughly divided into warmer and cooler temperate zones. The diagonal of the creek embankment creates a subtle movement and linear perspective, while the opposing diagonal of the log crossing the bank moves the viewer back towards the left side of the composition. I particularly enjoy the way the foliage is treated in the top of the landscape. The painterly construction of filtered light keeps a soft contrast between the darker violet shadows on the left, while suggesting delicate, wispy leaves on the right. Looking through your work on the site, I appreciate a strong sense of color among surprisingly varied color palettes. Rather that straight local color, I see a slightly more saturated chromatic range in your work, injecting an underlying intensity into otherwise restful scenes. I do hope you continue to post your new work. These landscapes are alternately, and sometimes simultaneously, refreshing, foreboding, and majestic.
