Curator’s Comments:
Pyramid is a joyous merger of opposites. I appreciate the painterly sensibility of the opaque and feathered dripped lines and irregularly painted edges, challenging the otherwise rigid compartmentalization of the composition. The solid primary bars and flat color are unyielding next to the decomposing/deconstructed sections. Interestingly, there is still a fundamental assertion of geometric primacy or certainty at its core. I alternately see this painting as roughly flag like in its repetition of stripes on a rectangular field. This fluctuation between repeated linear elements and disruption is also evidenced in several of your photographs; Cracked Ribs and Metal Squares being the most prominent. Stripped of the emotive color of your paintings, these works reveal an underlying essential structure, and way of differentiating lyrical juxtaposition of conflicting systems.
