Portfolios: Dream sketches

Curator’s Comments:
Searching for Appeal exhibits a distinctly different, and surreal aesthetic compared to your surrounding works on the site. Designated in a portfolio entitled Dream Sketches, there is a freedom of association combined with what appears to be more calculated visual iconography. The skeletal figure at the bottom, for example, extends an upturned arm with a dangling money symbol, as if to offer, or question, the economics of the serpent-like vices surrounding her. The extreme asymmetrical balance of the composition offers the viewer a white void to contemplate on the right, as the figures unevenly spill out to our left of an open door in the distant background. The piece appears to illustrate a type of Pandora’s box, opened and animated with human-hybrid creatures. I’m intrigued by the central head on the post- evoking a jester’s baton. More subtly composed, but just as provocative, are the ghostly humanoid figures emerging in the background, and exiting the picture plane.
