Curator’s Comments:
Malignant Kodoma is a fascinating piece. I admit I had to look up the reference to the Japanese spirit to ensure I comprehended your title. With that understanding I can appreciate the living quality of the green organic forms. They appear natural and tree-like, while sentient qualities could also be inferred. While depicted out of context of a created environment, the Kodoma initially appears non-threatening. However, the contrasting red tips and dark shadows merge with the blackish background to further imply a sinister malevolence or biologic malignancy. As with many of your other paintings I’ve enjoyed in the past, the fantastical subject is grounded in enough reality to suspend disbelief, and accept the created world of hybrid forms. This piece came up randomly today, which also gave me the opportunity to see if apart from the others for a fresh view.
