Curator’s Comments:
This self portrait has an unassuming vulnerability that is quite engaging and appealing. The tinted color palette and soft brushstrokes are suggestive of watercolor wash rather than acrylic. I wonder if light moves through the piece from underneath the canvas ground or if the actual paint quality is thicker, and more opaque. The very pale blue eyes of the figure add a wistful and pensive quality to the unassuming pose; the slightly raised shirt removes any remaining pretense of formality. The figure also appears slightly elongated or stretched, but it could be from the slightly narrow format of the rectangle. It's a very nice piece.
