Curator’s Comments:
There’s a certain irony to the profound humanity expressed in Maxwell among many of your other detailed human subjects. His expression seems to effortlessly capture several simultaneous emotions; surprise, reticence, and possibly apprehension. There is also a beautiful simplicity to the portrait, as his head fills up a large half of the picture plane. Formally the buff tone of the negative space on the left moves into the white or tan blocks of his fur, connecting the filled and unoccupied areas of space. I’m also attracted to the warm brown tones in the pieces, which translate the overall value pattern with warmth and contrast. I also like the Light Portrait Study and Alec 2 as they appear to be generated from direct observation rather than photographic representation. There is a feeling of physical dimension and intensity to them, because of the close cropping and heightened shadows.
