Curator’s Comment:
While I appreciate the raw, expansive force moving throughout your entire body of work, The Hunter seems to have a more complex color relationship. The vibrant pink hues vibrate off of the saturated reds, which exist more dominantly or even singularly in similarly composed pieces. There’s also an opening of the interior space. I’m drawn into the tangled linear elements, and intricate organic figuration. The black and white larger shapes on the left and bottom center provide a visual anchor for the streaming orange and yellow bursts. I also perceive a reaching characteristic to the bottom section- elevating the visual weight upwards to an encapsulated head-like contour. And while I personally distain viewers who insist they see biological forms in (my) non-objective artwork (i.e. is that a rabbit?) conceptually, my mind wants to interpret and make sense of the twisted maze of imagery. Impeccable Freedom is also a highly enjoyable and satisfying piece because of the unexpected relationships between the gestural red brushstrokes and the more calculated pattern below. The hard edged pattern functions as a visual rest, or break, in much the same way the open space does for The Hunter. Both works indicate an impressive physical scale, likely to give rise to other associations when confronted with the life sized object. I also wonder about the actual surface of these works. Freedom in particular has a highly articulated center, and its wispy edges suggest a papered surface in addition to layered pigment. But whatever the role of mixed media, I believe you are in essence a magnificent colorist. The visual command that comes from this work is tangent upon the psychological and formal handling of paint.
