Venezia I caught my attention with its lyrical lines weaving between decorative geometric and Harlequin patterns. The abstractions in the piece share foliage or landscape oriented elements, without supporting a traditional figure-ground relationship. I also find the shifts between warm red-violet shapes and more neutral, low contrast neutral hues quite interesting. The composition appears to be held together by two gridded areas with sweeping diagonal arcs cutting between them. I see the painting as much lighter in tonality and mood than most of your other works. I admired the strong black gestural imagery some time ago (the No Room For Buffalo series), and I see now how these bold works may have overshadowed my reading and appreciation of the more delicate passages in Venezia. I also recognize this piece was posted around the same time, and so I would love to see how your practice has evolved in recent years.
