Curator’s Comments:
Through the Digital Eye seemed an apt work to contemplate at this years end. While created long ago, the piece resonates as we consider the nature of digital expression in the rise of AI, and question the role of accident in art and mark-making. This painting initially appeared to me to be a smaller detail of another, as the dripping lines look to have been constructed with parallel streams of watery paint. But on closer viewing, there’s an interesting discord in the piece, as it teeters on the edge of accident/exploration and very calculated drop marks on the ends of the drips. These double-ended rounded drops at the ends are curious, as they cross a dark line, which has the most visual contrast in the work. This meeting of elements seems purposeful. To me, the row of these white pearl drop shapes suggests punctuation, musical chords, teeth….the ambiguity is arresting as the mind searched for context in the abstraction. I’m not sure what the “digital” in the title could reference, as the work appears to be made from analog, and even haptic processes. While some of your other pieces on the site utilize photography, the manifestation of the “digital eye” is still questionable. I hope you are still making new works, and if so, will consider sharing them to the site in the new year.
