Curator’s Comments:

There are interesting new works that incorporate 3-d printing.  The active surfaces have a strong sense of order in their repetition. I’m most attracted to the organic formations in Phyllotaxis among those in the new grouping, as the muted color palette underscores the sculptural relief surface. The slight increase in colored pigment along the outer edges offers a pulsating compositional movement. The circle within the square also generates a subtle but dynamic tension. The title (which I had to look up) further affirms the reference to a hierarchical biological structure, though the intervals of segments decreasing in size as they spiral could also recall a Fibonacci series. I enjoy the warm color shifts along the flat planes in Dead Palette as well (though I find this work’s title quizzical).  The value changes do not appear to coincide with a projected or illusionistic light source, and this more random tonal pattern is a satisfying foil to the regularity of the geometric forms.  Without an exterior edge, such as in Phyllotaxis, it does look as though it could be a section of a much larger whole.
