Curator’s Comments:
The mixed media piece Via Appia Antica resonates with an other-worldly air of erosion and the transitory nature of time. I appreciate the articulation of the small black tiles in the bottom section- the slight irregularity of the squares intuitively calls to mind the early Roman mosaics along the Appian Way. With this “road” tilted up towards the viewer, the vertically aligned leaves provide strong organic elements, and punctuate the space. They could also read as separate and full-grown trees along the edge of the horizon. The warm color palette also brings to mind seasonal change, and rich erosion of soil. The small pinkish blotches of pigment in the bottom half nicely connect to the top half and bring together earth and sky. The feathered edges of the warm color also nicely diverge from the hard edges of the tiles. Split into two equal halves, the square picture plane offers an alluring take on landscape and the memory of pictorial space.
