Curator's Comments:
I enjoy the purely formal qualities of this nuanced piece. The diptych at first appears to have an inverse spatial relationship, as the varied textual backgrounds support this illusion. Minor scale and shape differences in what look to be the negative cut-out shapes provides interesting variation in repetition. (On my monitor it’s difficult to tell if the linear forms are simply tinted the color of the background wall, or if they are actually open spaces.) The brushy sepia background of the first panel is warm and active; the second darker and more somber. Since the color pattern seems to shift less than the value pattern, it’s as if the second piece represents a longer buildup of pigment. In this way, an element of time is introduced into the work. I see this comparative compositional duality is present in several of your other works, and I’d love to see if you’ve continued with this interchange in your practice.
