Curator’s Comments:
Witch Looking for a Place strikes me as a piece that celebrates random elements in the creative process, based on its amalgamation of small organic figures dispersed throughout the picture plane, as well as its curious title. While the gestural figuration has a whimsical quality, the color palette is a little ominous. The murky yellow-green washes contrast the dark red forms, and they are tenuously connected by light and shadow. It does appear as though there is a light halo around some of the shapes, but without a common source or horizon line to ground them, the figures appear to float. While I want to make out a flying bird in the upper right corner of the piece, I’m afraid my associations might be more Rorschach based than an expression of your painterly intent. While a few of your other paintings on the site share a similar figure-ground relationship, Witch Looking appears somewhat looser in the formation of figurative elements. I was actually surprised to see the rather modest scale- it has an environmental presence that I imagined much larger, and expansive.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
