I had been planning this painting for a while. The "imaginary flower" studies from earlier this year were some of the preparatory designs for it. What's interesting is that the involved detail of those smaller paintings was pushed back a bit for this work. I think I have achieved a nice balance of color and design by keeping the flowers simple. This is the first of several works I plan to do in this vein - the setup can be reworked into many arrangements of color, which is really what this painting is all about. The image of the vase of flowers is secondary to the concept of arranging shapes of color, almost like non-objective painting, but with a recognizable motif to hang the colors and shapes upon.
@Leisa: Thank you! No, I have never designed fabric, but you are correct in that the basis for the design is inspired by the types of patterns you see in fabric, and by the way Matisse used such patterns in his paintings.
Hey, I love this! The colors and patterns are quite joyous.Have you ever designed fabric?
