I had been planning this painting for a while. The "imaginary flower" studies from earlier this year were some of the preparatory designs for it. What's interesting is that the involved detail of those smaller paintings was pushed back a bit for this work. I think I have achieved a nice balance of color and design by keeping the flowers simple.
