Mixed media on canvas.45.7cm x 61cm.One would not think that such contrasts could exist, but in the Northeast the high country in often is covered with snow long before the trees shed their fall leaves. In this painting, the contrasts are incredible. The orange of the leaves play the compliment to the blue of the mountain peaks creating a sense of hot and cold within the same painting. The use of cold wax blended with the oils gives the painting a rich textural appearance.

Curator’s Comments:
I see that you reside in Binghamton NY, and if not for my experience driving through that area during the autumn months, I would have assumed the color palette in Fire and Ice was highly exaggerated. The impasto surface of your cold wax technique contributes to the painterly representation of the landscape. I also appreciate the cooler streaks of color in the sky, which balance the visual weight of the heavily textured trees. The diagonal edge of the red-orange tree line breaks the high horizon line, and stops the composition from becoming otherwise predictable in orientation. Looking through your other works on the site, I remember enjoying A Bucolic Autumn Day, and others that depict fall colors; they teeter between true local color and more expressive or surreal landscapes.
